China’s strategy toward political conflict abroad

Furqan Khan and I have a new article in The Washington Quarterly entitled “How Does China Manage Political Conflict Abroad? Lessons from South Asia” that examines how China has tried to manage violent conflicts in Pakistan and Myanmar. There is a free, ungated PDF currently available here for the next couple of months. An outline is below:

“In this article, we explore how domestic conflicts and threats faced by Chinese partners can complicate China’s influence abroad and create new forms of Chinese security partnership, potentially even directly involving Beijing in foreign conflicts. We examine how China is navigating intense civil conflicts in Pakistan and, more briefly, Myanmar to identify the toolkit of strategies that China is deploying or proposing in response to political instability and violence in these partner states. We then consider broader implications for China’s expanding international footprint.”
